Things to think about!
If you are camping with a group, a potluck is the best way to go, but if the meal is for a single camper, couple, or family, start with a few checklists.
Set the Table with whimsical paper place settings. Have everyone write a happy memory or thank you.
Cooking a big meal in the campground?
1. Know your campsite and what the boundaries are. Is there a water source? Trash bins? Tables and fire pit.
How much room for cooking and clean up?
If you plan on frying a turkey-is it allowed?
2. Think about what can be purchased for the meal closest to the campsite. Local product is fresh, and farm-stand fruits and vegetables are divine.
3. Prepare as many dishes ahead of time if possible. Keep it simple. If camping the day before the holiday, prepare the main course ahead for an easy warm-up over the campfire for a few hours.
4. Set the table in an effortless, simple style. Go with big sturdy paper plates. Decorate the center table with sparkly lights and holiday theme centerpieces.
The hardest part is having everything ready at the same time.
5. Keep your timeline checklist nearby-It is much easier if you know when the camp potatoes must be on the grill for the holiday meal.
6. Create a wash station for easy clean-up. Set up two trash cans, one for trash, paper plates, and all disposable items and one for things that need washing. All things that need to be washed can then be sorted, washed, dried, and put away quickly.
7. Desserts are best served after a big meal clean-up, but that is strictly up to how you like to camp. The main thing is to keep it simple. Buy the Pies.
Remember to strain the dish-washing container for food particles before casting grey-water over a wide area away from the campground and water sources.
8. Have a plan for what to create with leftovers.
Go all out camping and create a sandwich board with all the fixings.
Create a festive holiday drink.
Keep the Desserts Easy; you’re camping!
