Living in the Riverbed
Snowy Egrets are thriving in this part of the river walk, they nest in colonies and love the water ways of the river where they wade through the stream searching for fish and insects.
Standing on the pipeline is a favorite pastime. A Snowy Egrets is a small heron. They have black bills with long black legs and yellow feet.
Plant life has started to develop in the riverbed, and the yellow flowers are blooming—the perfect spot for a snack. The Heron is know for their yellow bill, S shape neckline, and long black legs.
Still trying to get a wingspan of this beauty. Morning walkers believe there is a nest in the neighborhood. There are two Blue Herons in this part of the riverbed; perhaps they are mates, they tend to hang together in the morning in the pine trees. Great Blue Herons are known for their wingspan, blue-grey coloring, white head with long black plume, and black cape. They also have a powerful croaking sound.
We had heard stories about the herons catching fish in the riverbed. All true!
What a happy surprise finding this osprey living in the valley. Most mornings, it sits in the pine tree, only occasionally flying to the light pole just above the entrance to the path.
The perfect spot for surveillance. The Osprey is a medium sized raptor. They are usually found in coastal waterways but also love the Los Angeles riverbed. This Osprey hangs out in the early morning on the light pole overlooking the riverbed landscape.
The wildlife in the riverbed is enchanting. On a winter morning, this Egret was hanging high in the trees, looking over the riverbed. You can see the S-shaped neckline, the beauty of the pristine white feathers, a robust yellow beak, and yellow eyes waiting for the next meal to arrive.
The Black-Crowned Night Heron is active at night or dusk. This heron photo was taken early in the AM on our morning walk. Known for its stocky build with strong grey-black plumage, they feed primarily at night, preferring to hang in the brush during the day.
