An Artist Touch

While working on the checklist for "Let the Kids pack their backpacks." this fantastic piece of artwork arrived in the mail. EJW is the other artist in this family; her surprise sketch is picture-perfect for this week's header. Thanks, EJ; your timing was spot-on.

If you have an artist in the family, don’t forget to pack their supplies.

Pack it Up!

Let the kids pack up their gear for a fun camping experience.

Camping is fun, relaxing, and hard on accessories. Backpacks can be expensive, but the main thing to think about is how it handles being thrown around and battered. Let the kids select their packs but before doing so, do some homework on what they choose. Look for quality, not necessarily price. Not all expensive bags are quality and vise versa. If you are beach camping or somewhere wet, look for backpacks with rubber bottoms. As a designer, look for backpacks with double stitching and bias edges. Look to see if the layers are waterproof, especially if it’s going to the camp showers. A poorly made backpack can hide, but a good quality backpack can stand out.

Checklist

Create a checklist for personal items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, comb, or brush. Add whimsical camp items with a vintage or military-style component like water vessels, compass, binoculars. Add a communication device that connects back to adults and a camp whistle in case of an emergency. Throw in energy bars, snacks, maps on nature and wildlife—fishing equipment if fishing. Fill it up with a favorite book to read, card games, notepads. Don’t forget first aid items, sunscreen, sunglasses. Look for vintage camping influences for a remember when moment-color code items and backpacks for identification. Let them come up with camp names in the campground to keep them safe from strangers.
